I've got this shell drawing started.  Good chance to learn the techniques for making the ribbed shells.  I need all the shading practice I can get.

Hope to finish it this weekend.  Our local high school football team is playing in the semi-finals of the state football championship, so I am busy volunteering at the school store selling school spirit shirts!

Here's my shell drawing.  My shell ribs are not as good as they will be the next time I have to draw some.  I didn't really get the technique under control until the end.  Will do better next time.

Good lesson.  Still tonal challenged.

Looks great Mea
the technique does take a bit of getting used to as you are applying different pressures with the eraser

Nice attempt at the seashell Mea. Nolan's seems to have a softer appearance. Yours looks like a seashell that hasn't been in the water as long, but I like it.

Diane, thanks, I See now that I did not taper the ribs.  Need to take my own advice to others and really study the reference photo all through the process to be sure that every step is correct.

Thanks, Kathy and Jay.  As I said to the others, the ribs are not tapered enough.  Learned a lot from doing this one.

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou:  Thank you Cyril, Kathy and Mea for your lovely comments.

Mea, if we had to open a Shell Shop I would be Shell 'shocked' ... I struggled with the shells partly because I have to do my art in the evenings with poor light and my eyes ain't what they used to be. The side light on my work place was casting shadows so it was pretty difficult for me. Nevertheless, I got it done and am pleased to have completed it.

Doesn't seem that poor light and failing eye sight hampered you much.  Those shells look very good.  You made those cracks (imperfections???) look so real.

The more I think about it - those trees can look any way they - or you - want them to look.  It's either NATURE or ARTISTIC LICENSE.

Nolan suggested that Ryan work the sand a bit more, so here is an updated version

Ryan,

The changes you made make the sand look more realistic.  I really had trouble with the sand on mine.

Keep us the good work.

Ryan really liked the sand in yours and Patricia's sketches Mea. As usual though, he wanted a different effect  and I think he's happy with the result.

Jen, please thank Ryan for his comments about the sand in my drawing and as I mentioned in a previous post, he has such potential which should be exploited. Wanting a different effect is wonderful for he is letting his creativity have free reign and being happy with his results is the pay off. Great stuff.

I am so excited looking back over their work since July this year. Seems like we've been here longer than that, they have both achieved so much. Rachel is off and running with her portraits from photographs now and who knows where Ryan will get to. It has opened up options and ability that I really didn't know were there. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to pick it up too  :o

Ginger,

What color paper did you use?  I see a lovely pink glow in the background?  Or is that a soft sunrise?

Except for the stark light outline around the smaller shell, I'd say you did quite a good job.  See if you can blend in that outline a bit.  I had the same problem and just moved the tops of the shell ribs up a bit.

Man this was challenging ! Seeing all your shells and comparing them to mine I realise i definitely need more practice with all these techniques. Battled with the sand, battled with the ribs (mine are so squarish and there are way too few of them on the big shell) my foreground shell is a dodgy shape with some very strangely shaped ribs , aaah!

I realised i was in deep trouble when Nolan had completed his final cloth wash on the big shell and it already looked like a really good shell whereas at the same stage i just had this bland grey wash with no depth or any of the character he had established with so much ease. Loved the lesson and will probably try them again. Anyway thanks Nolan,,,

    Trev, a good try and Nolan will no doubt, be around when time allows, to offer his suggestions. However, if I may suggest and in my humble opinion, I think that your drawing would improve tremendously if you softened the lines/shading but as I said, wait for Nolan and his expert advice.

Trev

You did well.  I totally agree that this drawing was very challenging, but worthwhile from the skills gained in trying.

Keep at it.  You are showing lots of progress.

Trev, I think you have done an awesome job with your shells :heeha: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
I can see you battled a bit with the sand, so maybe do a few more practice runs on that.

What I do however suggest you do with this drawing is to darken your background. You can make it darker than mine. As your shells have light edges, by making your background darker, the shells will really pop.

To darken the background at this stage : take a piece of tracing or wax paper, place it on top of your drawing, trace the outlines of the shells, cut out the shape to form a mask. Place the mask over the shells. Then use your rag and start from inside the mask and rub outward onto the exposed paper while carefully holding the mask in place to ensure it doesn't move O0

Thanks Nolan!

These tips really help. I would never have thought about that and Ill definitely give it a bash. With regards to the graphite on paper and then cloth technique. I used a 6b pencil to get graphite onto my paper and then used the cloth on that. Is that fine or would I get more joy using a graphite stick? I get the feeling id be able to get more graphite on my cloth if i used a graphite stick but i didnt have one when I did the class. Ill get one anyway lol...

I really want to get my pencil work to a much higher standard than it is now!

Thanks a stack for all your efforts

Best

Trev my graphite stick is a 6B so you should exactly the same effect with your 6B pencil. The only reason I use the graphite stick is :
1) It came as part of a pencil set I bought so may as well use it
2) It doesn't need sharpening (I hate sharpening my pencils) ;D
