Title: Any advice on which Photo Editing Programme I should get?
Post by: Happychappy on November 25, 2015, 05:05:47 PM
Hi everyone,

I need help in choosing a photo editing programme and would like to know what everyone thinks is best for us to use in our art.  My children are asking me what I would like for Christmas and I was thinking of a photo editing programme such as Photoshop but apparently there are so many different versions. Nolan has mentioned that it has to be able to do layers so I would welcome any suggestions as to what everyone uses and prefers before I commit to what gift I would like.  Thank you for your assistance.

Great question, Patricia.  Look forward to the answers because I'd like one, too.

After looking at several photo editors my choice would be Photoshop Elements 14

(Amazon Canada link)
I think it has all you need and there are lots of online help documents and videos.

:thankyou:  once again Ray for your advice. I went ahead and purchased Photoshop Elements 14 ... something I know absolutely nothing about and will have to start learning. I have downloaded a huge Instruction book but it is more than 300 pages long!! I may look into purchasing a "Dummies" book.  Anyway, thanks a ton once again.

Being in the graphics industry I have a couple of photo editors at my disposal. One I use daily is CorelDraw. It has a great photo editor along with it's graphics editor. But if you are not very techy it may take some time to learn all the features.

One I recommend to customers and use myself on occasion is PaintNET-  http://www.getpaint.net/download.html (http://www.getpaint.net/download.html)

It is easy to use. That being said what is easy to me may not be easy to you. So I also recommend trying other free photo editing programs from the web. There are several good ones out there. Test drive and look for features that work for you.

:thankyou:  Jeannie for your suggestions. Not being in the least "techy" it will certainly take me a lot of time to learn all the features or indeed, how to even operate Photoshop Elements 14 which I purchased.  It is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I haven't had a chance to even look at the programme yet but once the festivities are over, I will be able to get down to it.  Thanks once again for your suggestions which will certainly help others who may be looking at an editing programme.

No Patricia, it is not difficult.  Just like painting you start with the first lesson and you keep building knowledge on what you have already mastered.

Those come with tutorials. Start at the beginning and don't move forward until you understand each steps.  You will soon be an expert at Photoshop.  After all you have mastered using all the PB software features, haven't you?

Also it will help greatly if you keep at it, you will learn faster. What I mean is that it is better to spend 15 min a day going thru the tutorial then 10h once a month.

Good luck!

Hi Patricia, Photoshop these days is an on going cost as they charge monthly and you never own it. I have it but am going to cancel it because I hardly use it. Gimp2 is totally free and I find better than photoshop. This allows you to work in layers and also has a heap of brushes to play with. You can find tutorials on how to use it on youtube.

Forget the editing program.  You can find those all over the place free.  Get them to buy you a sable water color brush if they are going to spend money for your future.  You are getting to be a very good water colorist.

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: Annie, Zilpa and Bryce for the suggestions which I really appreciate and for you having taken the time to reply.  I have already purchased the Photoshop software and asked my children to give me money for gifts so that I can save towards the Lucida camera which is what I would like next.  Art is not cheap but so enjoyable and since I don't smoke or drink, I think I deserve something I will enjoy having!!!  Thanks so much once again and thank you Bryce for the lovely comment.

Hi Patricia, I know this is an old topic. How are you doing with photoshop? I use it every single day with photos (photoshop 7). Ask me anything and i can tell you with it. I have searched for several years on anything new to do with photos. Just let me know.
