Dennis, I have seen that you changed the brush from a round one to a flat when you started painting the flower pot. may I ask why? I also saw that you're using a triangular brush for lines. Isn't this a good application for a script or liner brush?
Sorry, I have another mention: in the description you refer for the painting are to be 450x300. I think that is a typo in there should be 400x300.
Thank you,

Doina, there is no particular reason why I changed from the round to the filbert brush. I could just as easily completed the whole painting with the round brush, even the thin lines, as the brush also has a nice sharp point to it. I only used it for the leaves.
You have very sharp eyes to have seen I am using a triangular brush. Again an ordinary scrip/liner/rigger brush would have sufficed.
I normally have a large selection of brushes at hand and grab the first one that looks like I can get the job done with :2funny:
You're correct about the measurements. Will have to rectify that immediately. I did a copy and paste and did not check it properly :knuppel2:

Thank you Dennis, I do not want to be a troublemaker, but those questions persisted in my head, and I just ask. Thanks for the explanation. :)

Really loved this lesson, Dennis! Wish you'd do an entire course on still lives! I had to put an extra bauble on the vase due to a boo boo! Anything I should change?

Here's mine

I loved the glazing in this lesson Dennis, thank you! I had a hard time wrapping my brain around the curtain technique, will have to practice that. Messed up a few things but tried to salvage....
Suggestions/comments very welcomed :)

Excellent lesson Dennis.  I had a bit of trouble with the curtain and my colors looking muddy.   Messed up with the additional line on the vase as I should have arced it more, I was afraid to take it out and do it again.

I think seeing the shine emerge after all the glazing was most fun for me. I was at a point once where I thought something was wrong with how I was painting the vase because it was dull. But after continuing to follow Dennis' instructions, it emerged! Have fun with yours :)

Here's my submission for the lesson which I thoroughly enjoyed, thank you Dennis. However, my background has come out streaky which isn't the case in the painting. I guess because it is a dark overcaste day here today, the camera has picked up the imperfections as per usual.    Comments and critiques are always well received.   Thank you,   Patricia

Post by: Val on January 28, 2016, 01:43:12 PM
Hi Patricia, I think if you put more colour into the vase  (brighten) it will bring it out more. It would also bring out the shine (highlight). As it is, I find I'm being drawn more toward the curtain away from the vase. Great job  O0

Patricia,

I went back and looked at the other submissions.  Each one is different, but all beautiful.  So is yours.

In yours, the beautiful plant in front seems to be the attention getter.

I agree with Val on brightening the big vase if you want that to be the center of attention.

Excellent, Patricia

With your large vase, you have carried the shadow colour right across instead of just keeping it to the left side, hence the slightly dull look. You could try to carefully lift out some colour on the right side to brighten it up somewhat. No problem if you leave it as is.
Also, I do not have a problem with the streaks on the background - actually looks great O0

:thankyou:  Dennis for an excellent lesson and for your suggestions which shouldn't be too difficult to carry out.  So pleased that you never thought the background was distracting.  I really enjoyed the lesson but I always do for I learn something new with each lesson.  Problem is how to retain what I learn  ::)

This is so beautiful Patricia! The leaves are graceful (if leaves can be described that way!). The vase looks great too. If I didn't have the shiny vase to compare it to, I would just assume it was a marble/stone vase, still beautiful.

:thankyou:  So much Denise for your lovely comments.  I keep going back to your painting which I think is exceptional. It never fails to amaze me, that when I look at your paintings, I get a sense of such gentleness in the strokes of paint applied, a softness which is too beautiful and really difficult to explain. However, I think you have such a wonderful gift which you must exploit Denise.

:thankyou:  Denise for your sweet message. I just speak as I feel about what I see and I have always felt that you have such potential which needs to be brought out more. There was a time when you let it go and never did much artwork and I felt so sad for I thought it was such a waste of your talent. So don't ever let it go Denise for it is a gift.

Sarlota,

Your still life is lovely.

Nice shading and blending.  The variegation on the leaves is really good.

Check the bottom right corner of the vase - does it look like it dips to the right too much?

You are doing so well.

Bill, you have done a beautiful painting.  I have this painting hanging in my bedroom.  It is one of my favorites.   I remember having quite a time with those curtains.  You have done them well.   O0
