Nice work on this, Annie, especially the sails.

I did it last night but substituted a boat from Hawaii waters.  I need to fix it up a bit after seeing yours!  Maybe later today.

This was a great lesson, but my sails didn't look like yours because I used a different boat.  This is one that is in Hawaii waters.

I tried to get the nice billowing effect that you folks got, but was not as successful.

I think my sky came out well.

It was a good learning experience.

Oh, I did it on hemp drawing paper.

:heeha: Wow Mea, this looks much like the 3-masted schooner Challenge from Toronto! Very cool!!!

Do you have a photo for this? I'm a bit confused by the set of some of the sails so not sure which ones are correct. Which would invariably make a difference on how to help with the shading of the sails.

    Very nice Mea, it was an interesting lesson. I am just wondering if your paper is too rough for the tooth is very visible. Don't mind me expressing my opinion but the thought just hit me as I viewed your drawing which clearly shows vertical lines.  It may be my computer, but just check that on your computer screen Mea. Anyway, you did a great job.     Patricia

   nice work, mea! I love your clouds!  The reflection of the boat in the water looks really nice too.  Did you have a photo of the boat you drew to get the shading of the sails?

I just started the sailboat drawing last night. I must say it is much easier to understand the process of everyone's sailboat drawings working on it at the same time. This will be a new dimension of understanding for me. Your sailboat is the first I've observed since I started mine. I'm impressed that you are finding the shadings of your boat on your own. I have to watch every detail as Nolan explains. On your boat, it looks like all the sails are going the same direction. Is that how the wind was actually hitting the sails?  :boat:

Hopefully there are some eagle eyes out there. I'm not seeing my values well today so am looking for some sage advice here.  ;) I am resonably happy with the first two sails, the third is giving me no end of grief!  :crazy2: I can't discern if I have lifted enough to get the proper shaping on that sail. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

:thankyou: Thank you so much mea! It is so exciting to be drawing with the rest of you. I did notice that my boat is a bit small. I just didn't plan it to fit the page as well as some of the others did.

I see what you mean about the boat looking like it is sitting on top of the water rather than in the water. I'm not quite sure how to shade it to bring it into the water but I am going to play with it and figure it out. I really appreciate your trained eye to help me grow!  ;)

In the lesson, did Nolan say this boat is at anchor? I say this because there's no sense of motion. No wake, no water breaking on bow. It's not your drawing. I saw it in the original, also.

Post by: Kathysutterlin on March 25, 2016, 11:06:52 PM
Hi Val, I don't see what your not happy with. Maybe it is what you already erased. From what I see in the photo, it all looks really good. If anything, I would think maybe a bit more darkening and highlighting in the creases of the folds of the top sail.

A step away from it for a few hours and maybe you will be happier with it? These are my novice insights. I personally think it looks great!  ;)

Hi again, Val.  From what I can see by comparing to Nolan's, he seemed to use a darker pencil on the left of the third sail.  Mind the detailing of shadows.  There is also a white rope (erasure?) across that sail.  Hope this helps.  You're doing a banner job!  I love the way you did your clouds.
Title: Re: How to draw a sailing boat

Thanks for your comments Kathy and Danielle. Appreciated.

Kelley, so good to have you back on the scene!  :yippee:   I did (I think) have that sail a little darker, maybe I lifted too much off when I tried to put the lighter section up the center.  ???   I can see now I also lost the sheet line when I lifted out the light section.    Oy such a shamozzle!  ;D

I've left it alone the past couple of days as too bouncy onboard. The river always gets a little crazy over Semana Santa. Will have another look tonight after things settle down.

KathyK,

Nice work on the sailboat. So smoothly blended.  Nice reflections on the water from the boat.

The big S-shaped cloud on the left pulls my eyes away from the sailboat - maybe break it up a bit.  Looks like a serpent breathing fire.

Although the flag is well drawn, it looks a bit out of scale.

Love the birds, especially the sense of depth you have them in, with the third one just coming into view.  That looks cool.

Thank you so much Kathy S., Kathy, Mea and Patricia.

I did go back and make a few changes on the sails and I think they look better than the previous posts. Still have some work to do on the water, having a bit of bother lifting out the graphite. I didn't take the time to dig out my good drawing paper and am doing this on regular inkjet paper. Don't know if that is the problem. I just like to save my good papers for original works since I don't have ready access to supplies. We do what we can.

It has been a bit too bouncy last night and today so no drawing for now. Perhaps later on. So..... think I'll just go fall overboard!  :heeha:

Having issues with the reflections, have put in and rubbed out and put it back so many times it has become ingrained in the paper.  So I guess it will have to stay the way it is or I'll go right through it!  :eyesclosed:

I think this one has taken Ryan more time than any other task to date. Not sure if that was because he was enjoying it so much - added an English marine with rifle and necessary flags, "Union Jack and an English flag." He says the lines on the ship are the rigging (was there a question on that in the video?!)

Ryan forgot to mention that he didn't use a template for this one. He drew it freehand, which could also explain why it took longer!

Great job on the sail boat.  Nice billowy sails.

Love how you signed it.

It is really good to see the progression of work - appreciate seeing yours Val! Ryan had most difficulty with the clouds early on and I remember being very dubious when he showed me the sails taking shape!

Ta much Patricia, Cyril, Mea, KathyK, KathyS. Thanks much Zayn. Sorry to be dragging this out so long, these lookers of mine are really playing tricks on me of late!  :D   The next post should see this finally completed...

:heeha: Excellent job Ryan. I have been wondering why there appears to be a tiller on this boat....and no one at the helm?!  Good thing there isn't much wind!  :boat:

I thought it time for an update.... just deciding where to put my little man. I'm thinking at the tiller, just seems right...  ;)

As an aside to Nolan's musings about what 'those things' are on the side of the hull. They would be the chainplates that anchor the standing rigging to the boat. So there you go, just another little bit of nautical knowledge for you!  ;D

   Now I really wish I'd used my good paper!     ;D

:thankyou:       :cloud9: Nolan, all I can say is you are a magician at helping me see. You and those dang shaded balls!!!  :faint:    :2funny:

Seriously, without the going back and the practice of those balls; (spheres if you prefer), and just practicing shading patches, this drawing would never have turned out as good as it has. I've said it before...and yes I'm going to say it again. The sphere is the most important lesson you will ever learn. It will teach you values, teach you how to create and use dimension.  It will improve your drawings, and improve your paintings.
So.... learn it, practice it, and use it well.  :knuppel2:
After all, I'm blind as a bat  8) ... and if I can do it    ... what's your excuse?    :coolsmiley:   Come on...show me your balls spheres!   >:D    :2funny:

:flowers: :flowers: :flowers:    SO PROUD OF YOUR SUCCESSES, VAL!!!  Only a person who sails as you do could do such a great drawing!!!  And soon the hard cash will start rolling in!!! WOW, YOU'LL HAVE IT MADE IN THE SHADE!!!

Yeah, we should never stop drawing balls!  That little buoy in Portofino Harbor took some doing, especially as tiny as it was!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Am late again in catching up with all the posts and I am OVER THE MOON about your commission Val.  It is absolutely wonderful news.  It would seem that our members are really making strides with all the commissions they are receiving which must make Dennis and Nolan so proud as we all are.  Very encouraging for sure.

Had to crop as had a problem removing the blue tape. Still don't have that down yet. I was careful to remove the tape like Nolan said and even used the hair dryer. I need to find better tape I guess.

 How odd, this is the first time this post has shown up on my feed in a long time...

Thank you for your comment Kris, much appreciated.

Great drawing of the schooner!  :heeha:    One thing that popped out at me is below the bowsprit. The line coming from the cutwater out to the dolphin striker should be perfectly straight.  O0
