Title: Bill's - Let's Draw
Post by: bgaugler on May 09, 2016, 07:26:09 PM
Just started the Let's Draw course - my first attempt at creating something artistic since about the 3rd grade (a long time ago). Any comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

:bigwelcome: Bill! You made a wonderful choice to do the "Let's Draw" course. I finished the course about a month ago and am amazed at all I learned. Nolan gives excellent detailed instruction.

Your landscape came out nicely. I like your reflections in the water.  O0 Using the eraser for shading is fun, isn't it? I'm thinking you could carry your sky shading all the way down to the mountain leaving  the area of the sun reflection lighter than the rest of the sky. On your two middle peaks, you could possibly soften the inside outlines just slightly. ;)

Keep up the good work Bill. You are on an incredible adventure!

Nice job on your first drawing!

Welcome to the club, Bill. Nolan is a great teacher, so I believe you're going to have a lot of fun working through the lessons. I'll be looking forward to seeing your drawings.

Hey Ho there Bill!  :bigwelcome:   You're starting in the perfect place. You are going to be drawing so many wonderful things before you know it.

Good job on the first drawing, just soften the 'outlines' of the mountains and give the boat and little man a bit of reflection.
Nicely done!

Good to see your first work, Bill.

You are off to a good start.  Doesn't this one make you feel like an instant artist?

KathyS has good suggestions.

My other thought is to vary height and the distance apart of the tall trees a bit more - You'll learn from Nolan and Dennis about those soldiers in a row. (Looks like the EKG my husband just got from the doctor.)

Happy you took the plunge.  You are family now.

The (slightly lopsided) ball

:) Good afternoon Bill, This is a great shading exercise, isn't it?

Your ball looks good and it could be spectacular with more contrast. As Mea always tells me, don't be afraid of the darks  :2funny:.
What that mean is that if you go darker on the shadow areas, it will give you more ability to gradually go lighter until you get to your highlighted area. Also, if you have just a bit of #2H pencil shading the lightest area, your outline will be softer. Then you can take your eraser and lift out just a bit for the lightest highlight.
So glad to see you posting your work.  I hope this helps.  ;)

Hi, Bill!

Nice ball. O0

As Kathy mentioned, you should add some more shading. Try making the transition from the shaded part of the sphere to the highlight more gradual.

Is that very light patch near the bottom of the sphere supposed to be reflected light? If so, move it down to the bottom. Since it's light reflecting off the table, it would be brightest at the bottom and fade out rather quickly the higher it gets on the sphere.

Drawing is a lot of fun, isn't it? Before long you'll be making masterpieces!

Bill,

Steve and Kathy gave you good advice.

What you did was good - but you have the potential to make it great!

Good start Bill

Keep adding more contrast though by making the dark darker in the bottom right hand side, then you will be able to fade away slower to the highlight area. This will give you an even rounder ball O0

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. I agree the ball could be darker in the dark spots to make the shading more gradual.

The Berries. I tried to incorporate some of the previous comments, but I think it could still be a little darker overall. As always comments are welcome.

Hi Bill! Your berries are looking good. I agree with you. You can go darker. The leaves too. As you get more comfortable, you will find that the darker you go in the shadow areas, the more you can manipulate your shape and depth of the rest of your drawing. You want only the very brightest part of your highlight to be white. Also, try softening the outline of the berries so that the outline disappears into the tone of the berry.  ;)

Good job on the berries, Bill! O0 O0. I love the shading you did on the cast shadows. Well done.

I would work a bit on softening the hard lines in the veins in the leaves. They look a little cartoonish. This goes hand-in-hand with Kathy's comment about the outlines of the berries. You can have distinct lines; they should just blend into the adjacent tones better. We're all guilty of this. :)

Kathy,

I see what you mean about the outline of the berries. I darkened the leaves some, but I agree they are too light still.

Thanks for your help.

I appreciate the comments and compliments on the rocks. It was a fun exercise and I sorta "got it". I understood where I was headed and had an idea how to get there. Which brings me to hatching. Below is the 3rd version of the coffee cup. The first two were so bad my dog hid his eyes when I showed them to him. Kidding about that part, but they were not good.  Anyway, here is the Coffee Cup

:D Wow Bill. I really like your mug. Did you do it in ink? It has a very dark rich look to it. :yippee:

Bill,

Your rocks look good, although they could use more darks.  (Where have I heard that before????)

Your coffee cup is WOW!  The darks made it eye popping!

Kathy & Mea,

I used pencil, not ink.

To get the drawing online I used the scanner at my home rather than the one at my office. I also scanned at a higher resolution. The result seemed to be a darker overall image with less mid tones.

great hatching Bill :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

Just play around with the scanner settings - also maybe try your digital camera (even a tablet can take great pics - just ensure you have an even lighting over the drawing) O0
