Thanks, Nolan.  This is a really fun class.  I love owls and your instruction made it so easy to do this one.  Love doing the blurred background.

A neighbor saw it and loved it so I am going to make the Hawaiian owl for him as that is his family's aumakua (Hawaiian word for a protective spirit). It looks very different than this one.  the Hawaiian word for owl is pueo.  I will post it when I get done.

Thanks, John, I love owls, too.

Here's the Hawaiian owl.

Please let me know what it needs.  I can finish it in the morning. I sent the reference photo a few messages ago.  He does not look like the typical owl.

Looking very good Mea. You need to punch up those darks under his chin/neck area, and a few darker spots in the feathers on the breast. A bit more variation in the values around the face, check the highlight areas in your photo.

Doing a great job.  :cheering:

Thanks, Steve and Liz.

I am certain this owl will mean more to my Hawaiian neighbor than the more generic owl I did in Nolan's lesson (although I liked that one better because it was less detailed).

Back to the drawing board to get mine right.

:thankyou: :thankyou:  Kathy and Val for your reassuring comments which inspire and encourage me tremendously.

Val, as you well know, I struggle with the darks and I must thank you for your wisdom which you imparted to me, for I kept on seeing your words .... "use a darker pencil" and that is what I did.  When Nolan used a 6B, I took an 8B and I think it is visible in my drawing. My sincere gratitude Val.

Well, Patricia, you achieved a softness that I could not.  I love your owl.  I'm going to go back and study the two side-by-side to see how you got yours to look better.  I probably should rewatch the lesson, too.

Wasn't it fun to draw this guy!

:thankyou:  Kathy for always being so encouraging, you are special.

:thankyou:  Mea for your lovely comments. In order to get the softness of the feathers, what I did was lay down my darks first and then went to the white feathers and used my eraser very gently. Hope this will help you Mea.

:thankyou: Steve for your lovely comments too.

You are all appreciated more than you can know.

After three hours of tweaking, I am pronouncing this pueo finished!  (Unless someone has a major idea for improvement.)

The problem I was having is this owl chest does not appear to have the rounded feather.  It looks more like fluffy fur in some places.  Plus it was blown by the wind, making it go all helter skelter.

I'm sure my friend is going to be thrilled with it, no matter what.

Nolan, if you had not chosen the owl for the lesson topic, I never would have known that my friend wanted an owl drawing.  Using the skills from your lesson, I was able to adapt them to my pueo.  Plus, I still have your owl who can watch over me in my studio.  He's my new mascot!

Diane

I flipped your owl upright.  He is looking good so far.

If you can open up Microsoft PAINT, you can use it to flip photos before you put them in the gallery.  It's great, too, for resizing huge files that the gallery might reject.

Keep at it.
