Hello Nolan, I am starting a painting of Renoir's "Dance at Bourgival". I dont know if I am allowed to ask this question. Can you tell me what color I would use to paint the white dress? Do I start with an underpainting, yellow ocher or ultramine blue. Can you advise me. Thanks

the shadow colour of white is grey. I mix it using my primary colours or the results doesn't look right. You would however need to look very carefully as white always has other colours reflected in it.

If you look at Renoir's original you will see that there is very little pure white in the dress. He has used a Violet for his shadows

Thanks Nolan, that is a great help. Have finished the sketching in, but now I will be able to start the painting with more confidence.
