Super job on the rose, Patricia!:clap:

Maybe the FC pencils go on smoother because the medium is oil. The Prismacolor use a wax medium, I believe.

Eek!  :-\ I just bought the 72 Prismacolor set. It looks like I'll be using these for a while. I had started out with the Prismacolor scholar pencils. They have a harder wax. I just tried out the new pencils tonight which are a soft wax. They were much easier to use than the scholars that I used for the rose.  I was reading tonight that they can be blended with the friction of a spoon to soften the wax or odorless mineral spirits. I also have the colorless blending pencil. I will be experimenting to see what works best.

:thankyou:  Steve for your lovely comments on my rose and for the information about the two brands of pencils having different mediums which is probably the reason why the one felt smoother when applied to the rough paper.

Kathy, I also have the 72 count Prismacolor set and don't be misled, they are very good but I think my paper was the problem which left my drawing "grainy" looking.

It was very interesting to read about the friction of a spoon as a blending tool.  Please let us know what you find works best, after your experiments.  I have the colorless blending pencils and the mineral spirits too but I found that the colorless blending pencils didn't do the job.  Anyway, I find it all very interesting and I just love it.

I tried the spoon for burnishing the background. I don't feel it did much. This is the background after using the gamsol. I like the darkness of the background much better.

Nice background, Kathy. It makes the rose stand out even more.

Oh!  Kathy, the background is so much better and now the rose really stands out beautifully.  Yes, I like what Gamsol did.  Thanks for telling us about the back of the spoon, I won't even bother trying it now.  You have saved me some time for sure.

Great rose Patricia, did you find this new medium fun?

How is the learning curve compared with the other mediums you use?

Lovely Painting Patricia!

Kathy, your backround is darker and homogeneous after applying Gamsol (had to google this). There is so much of information and lovely paintings about CP in this thread that one should get curious and do the class!.
Cheers, Gita

:thankyou:  Barry, Jennylynn, Zayn and Gita for your lovely comments on my rose.

Barry, I have dabbled in coloured pencil before but what seems like ages ago. I really enjoy all art and would happily sit and do it all day, if I could but I do find that colored pencil is very time consuming in comparison to watercolor or even pencil/graphite drawing, possibly because you have to layer so much. Having said that, I still enjoy it, for like all art, it transports me into another dimension where I am at total peace and fully focussed.

I couldn't agree more, Patricia. I love the peacefulness that washes over me when I am immersed in my artwork. It is like a meditation to me.  I love it!  :smitten:

Oh yes, Gita. There is so very much to learn.  :smart: I agree that we have a lot of fabulous information in these posts.

Do give the class a whirl. It's awesome fun. I really enjoy Nolan's teaching style.   The more of us playing with colored pencils, the more we can learn from each other.

Kathy, I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said. The more we play around with these different mediums, the more we can learn and help each other with our findings and thoughts for there is just so much to learn and know which makes me wonder if we can ever hope to 'know it all' ???  :2funny:
