I hadn't been around for awhile as all of a sudden I had started to have migraine headaches and not only one but back to back! I have been bedridden for almost a month on and off!!  I go to a specialist next week.

but anywho I got a chance to paint and worked with Nolan's new painting "The Boathouse" I had a ball painting this. I learned a lot!
Thanks for looking. :)

      Wow, Robynann, an absolutely gorgeous painting.  You have done a brilliant job on it.  I am not into oils but I would love to try this one in watercolours.

So sorry to hear about your migraines. They are so debilitating and I hope you will get some relief when you see the Specialist next week. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Beautiful work Robynann.  O0

I have great empathy for you suffering migraine.  :( I first had migraine when I was 8 and have lived with them ever since. I hope they find the trigger.
Cheers, Val

Robyann,

Love the boathouse painting.  Dramatic.

I returned to doing oil painting recently and was instructed by someone who used turpentine.  I tried using it and got headaches and breathing problems.

I'm going back to Liquin Original!  No problems when I use that.

I hope it's not any solvents you are using in oil painting that is creating the problem for you.

Mea, consider using an oderless mineral spirit such as Gamsol. Or you could use Turpenoid. Both are way less toxic than turpentine. I use Gamsol for cleaning my brushes and have no problem. You can also use either of these to thin your paint.

I do use odorless spirits. I use the Mona Lisa brand and stand oil or walnut oil in my paint. I did think it might be the solvent at first because I had stupidly bought a real cheap brand when I was short on cash and it said odorless but it was not! but now I'm back with the Mona Lisa which has no odor and the headaches still keep coming. I guess we will see what the specialist says.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments. I really enjoyed painting this.

Thanks, Steve.  I've seen Gamsol on the shelf at the art store but did not know what it was for.

Actually, I use shampoo and conditioner to soak brushes and Ivory soap to wash them.  They work great.  My problem was when I was trying to use the solvents that my instructor wanted me to use.  Yikes, the smell was awful.

Beautiful  :painting:
i hope you get an answer to your migraines. Mine are triggered by stress and strobing lights and sometimes the computer. Dr advised me to take 3 asprin as soon as i see the bright lights that i usually experience on one side. This does the trick. Then ilie down in a darkened room for about 1/2hr.

Mea, l guess there are a lot of different ways people clean their brushes. Personally, I wipe off all the extra paint with a paper towel, swirl the brush in a jar of Gamsol a few times to dissolve a much paint as l can, then wash the brush in Master's artist soap. But I want to try Murphy's oil soap. I hear that works very well and has the added benefit of being much cheaper and also conditions the brush.

Robynann, I'm assuming that your  studio space is well ventilated. In the summer it's no problem for me to open a window, but at this time of year l can only ventilate it by using an air purifier. Even though the evaporation rate on Gamsol is very low, I still like the ventilation.

Nolan,

This is a lovely painting.  Such great separation in the trees - each one looks distinct.
