Linley, saw your background - it looks like the background is  lit with additional light. Its just looks like a different painting! I would keep it the way it is and frame it!
I see it like this. 

But if you are unhappy with the background, you could use maybe Gouache or acrylics to get a homogeneous wash.

Thankyou Gita.... They are great suggestions. However I think I have managed to fix most of it by repeatedly gently washing over it, first in one direction, then the other, and I'm actually planning to frame it! I really appreciate the help and encouragement my PB friends have given me. I will keep your suggestions in mind however for future stuff-ups!

Thanks, Annie, I didn't know about this class on youtube.  I looked through this thread and everyone's painting came out so beautifully.  That shows what a great teacher Dennis is.  He is awesome. This was a fabulous class!  I learned so much and highly recommend it to others who do watercolor. 
I love how my background came out.  So pleased with it! Probably the best single color background I have done. The camera is not kind to it.  In person it looks so smooth.  My struggle was with the cloth..but all in all I am fairly pleased with my result. Your comments and suggestions are appreciated,
