You can make simple frames for paintings on board if you have a miter block and a saw, buy the "L" shaped moulding at Home Depot or Lowes and cut it at 45 degrees using the miter block. Glue all the pieces together and to the painting. Cut the pieces to leave 1/8" all around the outside of the painting to allow for the wood expanding and contracting.

I think I just realized that I don't have to put the painting behind the frame... a problem with impasto style.

Can I glue the painting (on wood panel) from the front of a L-shaped mold, instead of the back?

Do you recommend using a Japanese saw, or will light sanding of the edve do the trick?

Just a line to thank you again Brian.  You put me on the right track but telling me to get mold wood from the stores.  I don't have a rotter to make it myself and was not planning for so much either.

I look ar a few video on making frames.. and stumple on exactly what I had in mind.  It is call a floating canvas frame.

I hope I can do pergect 45 with basic tools.  I have a cutting box, a basic hand saw, a jigsaw (still have to figure out how to make a quide to  ut straight).  I am not a fan of rotating saw, I find them very dangerous and gave mine to a young strong fellow.  I am thinking of looking for a Japanese saw.  They are supposed to be very good for fine cuts.
