So I just blocked in the maroon color to see how it looks. It would need a lot more layers of course. But I'm thinking maybe I should go with a darker gray instead since the hotel said he was a somber guy. Your thoughts?

Yep, a dark charcoal. A bit darker than the jacket material. That's my tuppence!

Wow, Sharon, this is OUTSTANDING so far. I also like the grey jacket and 'velvet collar' with the maroon tie. Judging from his photograph, the jacket which he was wearing, looked pretty "with it" for a sombre guy. I am so excited to see it finished and to hear what the hoteliers have to say.

While we all seem to want to bright up his somber mood, I think you are right to go the route the hotel prefers.

Sharon you have done amazing work on the jacket it looks stunning,
I think whatever colour tie you do will look good, but a deep charcoal might be better as the eye may be drawn to the tie, hard to tell

Took a lot of scrubbing to get out the maroon. Liking this darker version much more. Once it's thoroughly dried I'll remove the masking fluid from the tie and will work on the shirt. Glad to have all of you to run this by!

And I think his bottom half is done!! Really glad I switched to the dark gray. It suits him (no pun intended!)
Question for you: between his collar and his beard it's black. Do you think it's his skin in shadows? Wanting to put a skin color down on his face and neck but this has me perplexed.

Just went back and looked at the original, Sharon. Definitely shadow, but not solid black.
Maybe put down a skin tone first, then add the shadow over it???

Yes it is a very dark shadow, but since this is a colour portrait and not black & white, you can take a bit of artistic license here. I agree, put down your skin tones and add the darker shadows gradually until you have a look you are happy with.
Coming on beautifully.

Yes, Sharon, looking at the black tie, it seems like it is more fitting of the gentleman. Amazing how one has to actually see different colours to get the overall look as it should be. You are doing a wonderful job and it is so interesting seeing this portrait come to life. Almost like a puzzle.
