So lately abstract painting has really caught my eye; specifically stuff like the abstract portrait down below.  But is that really abstract? When I think of abstract I think of something like the second photo (I see a bridge); and when I look up definition of abstract that's what it seems to be talking about.  If that portrait is abstract, is there a specific name for that type of abstract?

I tend to think of paintings like the portrait to be 'semi' abstract. The subject is easily identifiable yet not realistic. Whereas a full abstract has no really discernible form, it is up to the viewer to make of it what they will. I suppose you could say that it's like a sliding scale between realism and abstraction, with the extremes being at either end. Both of these paintings fall somewhere along the scale with the bridge just being more abstracted than the portrait.  I hope this is making sense.  :crazy2:

Zach, I think Val has hit the nail on the head. Are these your paintings? They are both marvelous!

:thankyou:  Val! I talked to another guy and he said that portrait might even be classified as impressionism.  Isn't that a form of abstract, just with more detail?

BeaSue - no I wish they were though!! They really are gorgeous paintings.  I pulled them off of Google images, I have no idea to whom the credits goes.
