I did this drawing from the photograph. Maisie hates having her photograph taken and always puts her ears back. I changed the left ear slightly because it had got stuck in an odd position. My question is about the background. I wasn't sure if I needed to have some of that in. It's all a bit busy and rather distracting. Any other general comments also very welcome.

    Sally, I think you have done a very good job on Maisie.  As for the background, I am "background challenged" so would always leave it plain but wait until the more experienced artists give their opinion.  Anyway, you are really progressing in leaps and bounds which is lovely to see.

Great job,  Excellent likeness.

My suggestion for making it better would be to make everything that you see as dark a shade darker, especially around the eyes.   Make two cut-out squares, each in proportion to the drawing and reference.  Place the cut-outs over the eyes on both and you will see clearly what needs to be darker.  This is a great simple trick to use to match anything up.

Patricia is correct - your advancement is noticeable!

If you aren't confident or don't like a busy background, you can leave the background as is, or make it a solid colour to enhance Maisie's portrait.  O0

Beautiful job Sally. Well done!

Beautifully done    I feel that the white ring around the pupil is just a bit too prominent. I suggest toning it done a bit O0

Thank you all for your kind comments they are very  helpful and I really do appreciate them

Patricia, I think I maybe background challenged as well.  My fear is that I will do something that will distract from the main drawing. Val,  I will leave it plain for the moment but take careful note of what other people do with backgrounds

Mea you are right about the eyes they do need darkening. I will try the two cut out squares it sounds like a useful trick.  And Dennis yes the ring is too prominent.  In fact looking at Maisie herself I can see now that the eyes are much, much darker than I made them.

Great drawing, probably needs a bit more negative space on the left.
The background? I think the cushion merges into the body and is a little distracting ... only a little  :-\
