I did one two years ago and after two years of pastel painting really excelled me with values!
And  poor to a lesser extent though.

I'm right there with Dennis Jay, you did the lesson, grasped the concept, and got the technique. In my book, that's a success!  O0

:thankyou: Dennis for another great lesson.

Although the painting is not great and my clouds were so bad I turned them into mountains...  I learn tonne during this exercise, including that it was normal for the pigments to separate.  Really puzzled me at first when I saw the blue floating in the water.  It will take me much more to master colour tonal values, but this is a great start.

I also tried a smoother paper then for the cosmos.  I did not like it very much as the paint was being absorbed very fast and it was difficult to lift off.

Cheers, Annie

Annie, you have captured the essence of the tonal ranges, and that is what the lesson was all about    The first thing I saw was the beautiful and very well painted "mountains" :2funny: Excuse me laughing, but they are good indeed. tonally speaking O0

The first thought i had when I looked at your painting was,  :heeha: look at those great mountains....  there were mountains? i didn't paint mountains, could have been I suppose.  ??? Either way, I still can't tell what mine were!  :2funny:

Super job Annie on the tonal ranges!

First try at tonal values..    Yes, I know this is important but not sure this is a good shot at it.

Judy,

I love the look of this in tonal value watercolor.  Has a richness to it.  Has a folk art feel to it.  It comforting.

Hi Judy, you have also captured the essence of tonal painting    The center of the doors have some lines that are out of perspective.
I'm just wondering why, all of a sudden the clouds are turning into mountains?

Annie - I love your tonal painting and your "cloud mountains" are excellent!! You can't stop doing WCs now!

Judy - well done on your first tonal painting! It has a "Little House on the Prairie" feeling to it!

Sorry, Dennis I modified your lesson.   This was a great lesson.  I will try to do quick tonal painting exercises periodically.  I appreciate now the importance of developing a good eye for tonal range.

Mountains:  It is just that I could not paint clouds yet, and my clouds looked more like mountains to me.  :knuppel2:   I am painting with my friend Judy, hence why hers are also mountains!  I am sure we will have a lesson later on sky and clouds.

We are trying to behave better with the next painting

 This was a tough lesson. I certainly learned a lot but I feel I have a lot of room to improve on this. Mixing the color was challenging as well as finding the correct tonal ranges. I welcome observations and suggestions.  :help:
