I like your point: let the birds in  ;).  Okay, so I've added a little more shadowing on the right.  If you see anything else that needs fixing let me know.  I am working on the picture that you sent as an example.  I can probably do a few at a time.

now I'm becoming pedantic so you can keep expanding the boundaries, but you can still darken the foliage on the shadow side, ie, bottom right. then soften the shadow as you move away from the tree

I probably chose the wrong colour to darken (green) instead of a yellow/brown or tan as a shadow for yellow foliage.  I lightened the shadow slightly and added gradient colour to the bark so it wouldn't be such a stark contrast there.  I appreciate your help in understanding the subject.

Dennis & Nolan: The best any artist could possibly hope for (well, at least this one!) is praise from his instructor :yippee:.  I have a long way to go, but I want to stop every now and then to say thank you for coaching us.

 Well done Kelley! Lovely tree. The overall shape is very natural and pleasing.   O0 I'm going to have a go at some bushes I think. The lion should be up later today.
Cheers

I so look forward to your work Val.  O0  Hope to see your lion soon.  Being Pacific time, I will log in again after work today.  Today is an election day (not for US President, but Senate and local measures) so I'm going to vote, too.  May the best contender :fight: win.
