I was so impressed in Susan's Squares that I have adopted that form to finish off my watercolors and inks.  Here's the first one to go to a show next week.  It's watercolor and ink on a 12" square cradleboard.  The painting was adhered to the surface with Heavy Gel Matte.  Then preserved with 3 coats of Kalmar Varnish (spray).

Great idea Mea! So you did not use the wax to seal it? Is the Kalmar varnish spray also a wax spray? If not, does it affect the colours of the watercolour?

Thanks, Gita.  No, I used only the Kalmar spray varnish on this one to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks, Mary Lou.  I really like the nice clean look of this and no heavy, expensive glass frames to deal with.

I have prepped a couple of the boards with watercolor ground, so will paint directly on them next.  Will let you know how that goes.

Looks great, Mea!  :yippee:  :yippee:  :yippee:

What size is your cradle board?

You might consider painting the sides of the board in a color that compliments the colors in your painting.

I look forward to seeing more!!!

Thanks, Susan.  That was a 12"-square cradleboard.  (That's what my friend calls them, so that's the word I am using.  I had been calling them "wooden box frames.")

I thought about painting the sides, but there is actually a lot of cream color in the painting and that is what the sides really are.  The light was making them look white.

I agree that it looks best  to make sides that match the painting.
