In Puerto Vallarta there is a famous pirate ship that sets sail daily at sunset - then lights of fireworks every night! Last summer I captured this photo while in PV - and have been procrastinating for months about painting it. Finally got up the courage - although not sure it this would be better as an oil painting. Anyway, here’s my effort and the ref photo. Would grately appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Cheers,
Sharon

Pirate ships are always fun. I think the halo of the sun needs to be diffused a bit, unless you meant it to be as it is. Other than that the only thing I can see is perhaps a bit of reflected sky colour in the water. Looks good.

I have a few pirate ships, have got quite a bit more practicing to do with skies and water/waves with the pastels first.

Cheers, Val

Thanks Val - and that sun halo really should be diffused - you're correct. Heading home from Carmel tomorrow so I'll work on it when we get back...And good luck with your pirate ship! Honestly, the thing that kept me procrastinating on mine was that sky...
Cheers,
Sharon

Hey Sharon!

Val made an important suggestion.

Also, check the amount of sun reflection on the water - seems more diffused in the reference photo.

Have a safe trip home.

I like the painting better than the photo.  Very painterly.  I do agree though that the halo around the sun is a distraction.    Very pretty painting Sharon. :yippee:

Thanks Mea and MaryLou.

Before I head back down to LA to visit my folks (and please keep your fingers crossed that there are no emergency Visits this time!) I’ve tried to improve on that sun halo. This is a very different style of painting for me - less realism and more of that Mexican style. Still thinking I should try painting this in oils too! Is it better??

Sharon

:thankyou: Patricia! And I agree that Val's suggestions took this to a whole different level. I'll be taking this painting and my recent cactus painting to PV next month to have them framed there...and then I'll hang them in a restaurant where I have other paintings currently displayed.  Some friends of mine are opening up a butterfly sanctuary in PV in June and they want me to have an art show there when they do - so I think this will be a good addition to that exhibit!
Cheers,
Sharon
