Oils on paper

who has been experimenting with oils on paper?
When I started to paint the feb. painting challenge, I mistook
the photo to be a mixed media challenge and drew the outlines first with ink on paper. After realising my mistake I decided to continue anyway and painted with oils on paper.
I personally found it a nice experience to paint with oils on paper.
The colours are fascinatingly brilliant and the paint moves so smoothly over the paper.
Since I did not prime the paper the painting might not last for ever.
But I intend making a good scan copy of it to preserve it.
What are your opinions Nolan and Dennis? Sorry Val, was too late to ask you this question before starting.
This is accidental. Is this mixed media or a painting? In olden times I think the initial rough drawings for oil painting were done with graphite or charcoal. I am aware that there might be different opinions to this, but I can easily accept any rules to the challenge in this forum. It’s also an interesting topic for discussion 😊
All comments are appreciated.

The painting looks great
I would not recommend painting on paper unless the paper has been sealed as the oil will be soaked up by the paper. You then not only have an oil "bleed", but some of the oil which is meant to bind the pigment to the substrate is now sitting inside the paper instead of inside the paint. The oil inside the paper may also weaken the paper itself causing the artwork to perish sooner.

This is a splendid piece. How long have you been drawing/painting to get to that results?

Thank you for your opinion Nolan!
Soizic, I have been painting as a teenager. Nolan’s and Dennis’s classes gave me such a knowledge and motivation boost for the past 2,5 years that I my passion for painting has increased tremendously. In fact, I still keep learning from other artists in Paint Basket.

I agree with Nolan. Canvas has been the substrate for Oils for many many years. The Old Master's paintings has stood the test of time only through one thing. They all found out that the canvas had to be primed (sealed thoroughly) otherwise disaster. Any oil that seeps through to the canvas will eventually rot it and it will disintegrate. The original primer was chalk based and needed special preparation and application. Today we have it very easy with the acrylic primers. Cheap stretched canvases have the absolute minimum of primer and should not be used. If you hold up the canvas to the light and you see pinpricks of light shining through, either throw it away or add a few extra coats of primer as I have done in the past. For the above reason only paint on paper if it has been acrylic primed.
