Hawaiian monk seal photo and value sketch
Will the short hairs be too difficult to try a painting?

Maybe not,  Nolan always says to just give a hint of some and the mind fills in the rest.
So far, so good.

What a cute subject. It will make a great painting. Personally I wouldn’t show much, if any, hair detail. Just the value changes and the whiskers.  :)

I am sure you will do a good  :painting: of the seal, Liz, because your heart is in it.  :)

great job. This looks easy, but it isn't. It is one of those deceptive images.

I agree with EmmaLee, the hairs are so short use use shadings to paint this guy O0

:thankyou: EVERYONE!  Every so often I look at the photo and think I’d like to do a painting.  As Nolan said, I do think it won’t be as easy as it looks.  I’ve painted 3 other monk seals before but their bodies were wet and slick.  This guy basking in the full sun needs a somewhat dry and hairy look along with the value changes.  I think the challenge may be with the choice of brush and brush strokes as well; we’ll see. ~Liz

I would suggest taking a look at the techniques from THIS class as they will give you the effect you want
