This is a quick 1/2 hr sketch to test some new pencils I bought from Amazon recently.
General's Charcoal White #558 (Good resistance to smudging) and a Kimberly #525 9XXB. The drawing is on Strathmore Toned Gray Sketch paper.

Great drawing Dennis....theses  are in my buying list + some willow charcoal sticks for blocking .The only issue with charcoal it smudges unless you spray the fixative on it...

Wow, I love your drawing, Dennis.  I better look away because I need to stop adding items to my art supply wish list. :eyesclosed:

 :smitten: your ostrich, Dennis.

Are you happy with the charcoal white?
I have been hesitating on buying it myself, for awhile now.

This cormorant was tired from a day's fishing, so I was able to come up close with my 200 mm lens.

I am happy with these pencils. I bought them specifically for drawing on the gray paper. The 9XXB pencil does not become shiny when working up the very dark areas. I only use this pencil from the light to the dark tones. If you use graphite pencils at the same time your drawing will show up the shiny patches. So be careful when you do.

The Charcoal White pencil is fairly hard and not as soft as the normal pastel pencil, so it does not smudge as much. It does smudge slightly when you work it in very heavy as I have done here with the cormorant. A very light spray of fixative will take care of that if you need to. It does not take very well over the dark pencil so where I want a medium gray, such as in the wing, I first put down the white and then went over it with the dark pencil.
