I may have another go at this one and try doing it my way. It was on the flat top surfaces where I would have changed the direction of shading. It will be good to experiment and see how each looks.
Go for it O0

Cross hatching looks really good on drawings, so I was looking forward to the next couple of projects.

I enjoyed doing the mug, so thought I would branch out on my own and do one of the extra exercises. I opted to do the pears.  Now my problem is I can fairly easily copy someone else’s drawing, but when it comes to doing my own I get lost. I can see the obvious highlights and dark areas but it’s the mid-tones and how to shade them that I have difficulty with. Anyway, this is my effort, which I was discouraged with. Comments welcome!

Thank you Teresa. I'm enjoying the course. It's starting to get more challenging as I go on, but I'm learning a lot.

You are doing a fabulous job Carole, including on your hatched pears. :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

I can see that you understand what you are doing so from here on it is just going to take practice to keep improving. Remember you are actually learning many new skills all at once at the moment. You are learning to choose the correct pencil, you are learning how to control your pencil. You are learning how to use pressures and line distances to create tonal value. You are learning a new form of eye hand co-ordination.

Most of all you are learning to see :heeha:
It takes a LOT of practice to spot the different tonal values in the first place. Then you need to recreate that on your drawing.

At this stage you are spotting the lights and darks very well so I want you to concentrate on seeing, and putting in the mid tone tonal values into your drawings, especially in the transition ares where a tonal value quickly goes from light to dark O0

You are doing great, keep it up :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

Thank you Nolan. Yes, it’s a lot to take in. I will take a more careful look at the mid tones.

Next up is Teddy. Again, I enjoyed doing this, but felt I got a bit lost in the actual technique of cross hatching and then lost my confidence when trying to see the various tones from off the photo. I ended referring more to the drawing rather than the photo.

To bolster my confidence I decided to go back to shading and try doing Teddy again.  I am pleased with the result of this one. Comments please.

Thank you Elizabeth and Teresa.

Yes, Teresa, I enjoyed doing the striped top. It was fun to do and I felt more confident having learnt from the previous lessons about shading.
