I am wondering how do I cover a canvas that was painted on. I painted one of my pet portraits on a 16x20" canvas, it was a total fail and now I want to cover the paint and paint something over it. Do I sand it down, and then paint it with Titanium white or what shall I do? There is some texture from the previous painting.

Hi Maryna, I'm just learning about oils & colour mixing & glazing atm, so I'm no expert... I've been reusing my canvas, sanding them back & Gessoing them x 3 times. I just read the other day that for oils, shouldn't use Gesso but use Titanium white, so next time I reuse, I'm going to not Gesso them, but use Titanium white.

Thanks all,
Is an oil painting so Gesso will not work. I ended up covering it using a light Grey oil paint and using my palette knife with some texture.
