Hi Bigtone77, I have just come across your post and will try to help. The most common operating system used is Windows and it requires a dot and a 3 letter file extension, say .jpg  to tell it what the file is. The most common file used on the web for photos is the .jpg and this file is recognized by Windows, Apple,Linux and others. I use Ubuntu, a Linux operating system and the system can read the file without the extension telling it what the file is.
If you have cropped or resized the file in a imaging program and just saved the file it will by default put its own proprietary file extension such as .xcf for gimp. Only another high end graphics program will have the ability to open that file. For use on the net it is best to save the file as a .jpg and this should be supported.  Your file should have your file name followed by the file extension. YourFile + .jpg = YourFile.jpg

I Hope this helped,

Kerry
