This was an experiment. I painted these lillies on a black background on a 5" x 7" canvas board. I had to overpaint the lillies three times and even that was not enough to bring out the colour. I eventually varnished the painting and it brought out the colour a bit. I don't think I will try painting over black again unless it is a very subdued painting.

:offtopic: Alan not to get personal, but was wondering where you are from, my maiden name was Dixon (many moon ago) and I don't see many of them around anymore with that spelling  (except large family reunions).  Just wondering.

Hi Honeysuckle
I was born in Edmonton Alberta and have lived in Calgary Alberta for 46 years since I got out of the Canadian Navy. My grandparents were from England (Don't know where). My Biological Father (divorced when I was about 8) has lived in California and Nevada and I have a sister who I once saw when I was a teenager. but don't even know her name. I last heard about her in the seventies when she was living in the LA area. Any help?
Alan

You have done a great job Alan  Now you know why I am not a fan of the black canvasses and prefer to paint my own backgrounds around the subject.

Alan, I love florals on a black background. There is a form of Russian art called Zhostovo which is florals on black background. Had a lot of it in my house growing up ( I'm Russian)

It must have been difficult for you, but you did a wonderful job, surprised you only had to paint them 3 times to get that color. The lilies really pop against the background.

:thankyou: for all of the info Alan.  Well, my grandmother's family was also from England. Way, way back.  She lived in Kentucky until she married my grandfather and moved to West Virginia and that is where I was born.  Most of my generation have moved out all across the USA, most migrated to Ohio and Kentucky. Some to NC and some here to AL.  I have lived all over the US, mostly in Louisana and California. Guess our genetic lines did not cross.  But interesting to find out anyway.   :thankyou: for the time off from drawing and some relaxing time.

Been a very busy day. My grandson that I am raising graduated tonight and now I will prepare to  with ear tuned to telephone ring until I hear him come in safe and sound.

Very nice Alan
I love the contrast between the black and the red, makes the lillies stand out.

Look at those Lilies pop! That background sets these off amazingly and, it doesn't look black somehow.
Well done and thanks for sharing this. A great painting.

Alan, the colors are so bright! I can imagine how hard a black background would be to paint over! Great job!

Alan, I have a half painted red rose on a black canvas. I was so disappointed with how dull it looked that i have put it away for a rainy day. Your oranges look much better than the reds I used.
