LESSON # 33 - Painting a Strelitzia

Hi Ncwren;   I have some Daler Rowney brushes that are firm and keep a point. They aren't expensive ones, and they work great....a six and an eight is what I'm using.  I's sure like to find some more, but not having too much luck. I found a couple of D R brushes at Walmart and two of the six I bought are great, too.

I was unable to participate, so i had no idea what the subject looked like.....

Natalie, Jennylynn.. excellent job on a paint-along.  I was not able to watch this but I am anxious to give it a try as soon as I am back at home.  Very admirable.

I love the colour in both your paintings, Natalie and Jennylynne and you have great paint along skills! I would love to have painted along too but I'm off to Japan for a couple of months and the lessons will be too early in the morning for me. I'll have to be happy with the replays.

Thanks Bella-I'll keep my eyes open.  I have a good variety, but they are either too chunky or floppy for the kind of lifting Dennis was doing.

Any suggestions for change? 

I've only seen these in real life when we were in Hawaii many years ago.  They are very stunning!

I stretched the paper on my wooden TV table, using the paper tape as Dennis taught in the video.
The paper had minor hills and valleys while painting, but is flat now after drying.  So the procedure was a success.  I will finish using up the quarter sheets of W&N? paper I bought ages ago, rather than fighting with that low grade paper I've been using. 

If I ever want to do larger paintings, I'll have to look into getting a larger board.

It still took me much longer than Dennis to paint the picture. 
I really don't think I can do a paint along and I salute all those who turn out such beauties within minutes of the end of the class.

Very nicely done Lillian        Glad your paper stretching went well for you. I have never been able to get the sticky paper tape so I had to buy a commercial one. It's easy and there is a local carpenter here in the village so I am hopeful he can make me a couple of duplicates in different sizes.
I can't wait to work my way up to these wonderful flowers....so tempting to skip all the rest but one must have discipline. (even though I did jump forward and do the w/c pencils!)

Amazing painting Lillian!  I find it so harmonious and balanced in its colors. I have never had the pleasure to see them in Hawaii. You are lucky.

Dianne, I hope your moving chores go easier than you think.  Just maybe you'll be able to squeeze in some time to paint and/orbefore your trip.

C.B., it was great you could take in the class yesterday.

Natalie, you were first up with the paint along  and what a fantastic job you did! I love the alizarin in the lower background.  It really unifies the background and the flower.

Val, you must be torn between drawing and painting.     I know I was when I was going through the drawing course.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next, what ever the choice you make.  I love your paintings and drawings and you give good advice and encouragement here.  Also,  for all the chuckles and belly laughs.

Anki, I can't take credit for the color choices or the composition.  That's Dennis' domain in these exercises, but I had fun doing this and it was much less struggle on this paper.
