LESSON # 33 - Painting a Strelitzia

Bella,     

I have no more wall space!  I just prop each lesson up on my little easel and think about what I could have done differently.  Then the next one takes its place.  My file is getting thicker! 

I can't believe I'm actually caught up with the lessons and I'm really looking forward to the daffodils.

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU LAUGH

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospitals swimming pool. Ralph suddendly jumped into the deep end  and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the nurse director became aware of this. She immediately ordered Edna to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable.
When she went to tell Edna the news she said, "Edna, I have good and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving a life of the person you love. I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him, I am sorry, but he is dead."
Edna replied, " He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home."

Lillian.. when you come to visit, hopefully I will have beautiful bird of paradise in bloom and you can paint one while sitting on my lanai!!

   I am sitting in McDonalds near Memphis, Tn. waiting for a wheel bearing to be replaced.  Our trip has not started off so well... However, I get a chance to catch up on pb.

I did this about 4 days ago, but hesitated about posting it!  I know I keep saying it, but I really struggle with the greenery in all my paintings!! Very frustrating.  Also, I don't understand why my Ultramarine leaves a chalky appearance like it is trying to seperate. I mix it everytime I dip my brush into it and it still does it!

Your greens look good, can't imagine why you wouldn't be happy with it.  Your flower is fantastic!

The untramarine blue is a sedimentary paint and has very fine granules in it.  They don't seem to apply evenly to the paper because the granules tend to gather in some places more than others.  You did well controlling the paint in your background.  I find I always have the tendency to go back into the wet area and try to smooth out the paint and that ends up to be the wrong thing to do.  The best way is to mix the paint well on the pallet before applying it to the paper, just as you said.

I found that the wide brush made doing the background easier and gave better results.
