some subtle ones are fine, but you also need some strong ones as the reflections create the illusion of depth

Very nice Dirk, i wouls also put in some of the highlight on the fish so it can look like it is under water.   Hope this helps.

I find it difficult to mask the plants again... the plastic keeps rolling.  Would it make sense (next time) do paint the water, the fish, and then the ripples before doing the lily pads?
Cheers, Annie

Trying my hand at painting fish in oil now - here's where I'm at so far. Will work on the other fish tomorrow as well as the other lily pads.  I've gone through and seen everyone else's paintings - and they're all amazing! Plus I'm so impressed with those that added a third fish, as well as more pads and flowers. Mine is pretty basic...still trying to learn the techniques.

looking great so far Sharon

just be careful to extend your shadings to the end of the object otherwise you get a halo - you can see this happening on the top edge of the fish just to the left of the eye. If that halo is gone and the eye stays bright then the eye would stand out better O0

Here's my completed version. Kind of wish I had left the ripples off. Or had less. Luckily, the background is painted in oils so I can always paint over it if it's too much!

:heeha: The fish and lily pads look great! I think you were just having too much fun with the ripples and got carried away! Must have been the excitement of talking to Lynn and me!  ;D

That chat was exciting!! Repainting the background tomorrow. I'm definitely ripple challenged!

So I woke up at 1am this morning, went into my studio and painted over the ripples!! It was seriously preventing me from sleeping! Interestingly, there are still some remnants of ripples. So I'm happy with this painting now!

Sharon,

I think it's better because now nothing distracts the viewer from the beautiful koi.

Follow your gut - good rule!
