Portrait of Baxter
on:
February 24, 2013, 03:38:17 AM
Well, have been quiet on the Forum. Way too much work and a lot of baby sitting. After my grandchild left today I decided to paint him tonight. Hope I can get better after all of Dennis' lessons. Thanks tons Dennis. The thing that really bothers me here is the hard line between the image and the background despite going over the line with a brush. I wonder if it is the staining power of u. blue? I have been quietly looking at everyone's awesome work. Congrats to all. Everyone is getting so much better

Thanks so much Nina, Denise, Bhavna and jennylynn. Anyone have an idea about that hard line? I think one of you posted on the staining problem with ultramarine and can't remember if there was a solution.

So cute!!! And it is beautifully painted. I had to really figure out what hard line you were referring to. I'm afraid it's another of those 'now you see it, now we don't' kinda things. I did find it. I think I would take the paint brush to your visual perception and see if you can scrub it out there. Leave the painting alone. It is only where your back ground and his hair color have layered a tiny bit. I think that's why you'll often see artists leave a little white edge between the two areas. His face and shirt are fine. I do find those lines hard to get out . This is beautiful! Retrain your eyes to his little face and away from your 'line'.

I have to agree with Sarah-I'm not seeing this hard line. His face has a wonderful glow to it-and such a sweet smile.

Thanks Pete, Mary Lou, Natalie, Sarah and Dianne. "Take a paint brush to your visual perception"
. Yes, Sarah, this is true in many parts of my life
. True, Dianne, I am partial to portraits and still life but have been thinking about painting some louisiana swamp scenes, maybe very loosely in oils. We'll see. Glad you have persisted. SEE what you can do--love that Feb. challenge painting.

Lynn,your portrait is awesome
don't worry about the hard lines - 99% of the viewers will not even notice it at all.
What I am missing are the highlights in the eyes. Add them in just to the right of the pupils - with the highlight in the eye in the shadow less bright than the one on the right. Don't put the highlight in the middle of the eye.
