Thank you to those who have inspired me to try pencil drawing.

I needed a quick gift, so drew this of our family's new pet - a mynah bird that thinks he (or she) is human.

I had bare minimum for drawing supplies, so had to use children's colored pencils and an inexpensive charcoal pencil.

There are many "mynah" flaws, but I'm still pretty proud of it.

Please feel free to give me suggestions for a better drawing the next time.  Gotta wrap this one up as a gift immediately.   Ooops, forgot to sign it.  Wheww, caught that in time.

Mea I think you did a fine job being your first drawing. Suggestion, Always remember the direction the feathers are going, also pay attention to your light source. It looks like it is coming from the top left side. If that is true, the top of the head and the back of the bird would be lighter. The breast would be darker. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Zac, Nina, and Didwaud, for that immediate positive reinforcement.

Nina,  I am making note of your suggestions and will definitely heed them on my next piece.   Unlike working in oils where you can pretty much paint over your mistakes, I guess you have to make a whole new drawing in pencil.  I tried a couple erasures but they were unsuccessful.

I really appreciate everyone's input.

I will be 70 in September but feel 20 years younger since I started to dabble in art  and play in your paintbasket.

Really, Denise.  You look sooo much younger in that photo.  I was going to be looking for a 45-year old at Uncle's.

Thanks for the compliments on my mynah.  I am so happy today.

Mea--Great start in venturing into the world of drawing.  I too haven't done much of it but it really helps your painting and gives you the courage to draw your own compositions.  Adorable bird and great gift!!

    Mea, a great job for your first drawing of the Mynah and with limited pencils, you did a fine job.  Just one word which is ingrained in my memory since Dennis has been drumming it into us .... is always remember not to put the highlight in the center of the eye. Nevertheless, you did well.  You are just a couple of months older than me ....  seems 70 is a common number around these parts!!!  Like you, I don't feel that old but my body is telling me something else.  Patricia

Thanks, Dianne.

When Denise and I meet for lunch on Tuesday, we'll see who is telling the truth about her age.

Thanks for the positive comments and constructive suggestions, everyone,  on my little mynah bird.  He's outside right now chirping away, so he must have heard you.

Patricia,

If there is a highlight in the eye, it must have got there by accident.  The drawing is so tiny that all I did was leave a blank spec of paper there.  I do intend to do the bird again, much larger, in oil, so I will definitely be sure not do put a highlight in the eye center.  Thanks for the help.
