Toucan

My friend sent me this picture of a toucan and challenged me to replicate it in watercolor - would love any feedback. The real bird seems almost like a cartoon so the painting seems a little cartoonish as well...I'm attaching the photograph and my painting...thanks!

Wow! That's one colorful bird! You must have used all the paints in your paintbox for this one.
Well done, Sharon.
I can see you've been following Dennis' good teaching.

Sharon, let's face it. A Toucan IS a cartoon! The only suggestion I might ofer to your excellent painting is to perhaps soften the tail feathers just a bit.

Thanks, Jani - my friend saw the bird pictures I did with Dennis and now thinks I'm a bird painting expert - she's sent me a lot of photos!
And I agree, BeaSue - the tails do seem a bit on the hard side...I'll try softening them...
Thanks!

Brilliant Sharon!
These are such beautiful birds. The markings/colourings on the bill are like our fingerprints...no two are identical. I had such wonderful photos I took at Macaw Mountain last year, I was sorting them into folders ready to post for use....then the computer died while I was up in Canada. No one here has enough knowledge to access it. The new computer windows8 won't talk to the drive.
Wonderful painting, very well done.

Thanks, Mary Lou - and ouch about your computer, Val - how frustrating...guess you'll have to go to Macaw Mountain again just to take more photos!

Very well executed
Believe it or not, that beak is tough but also extremely light. It looks top-heavy in flight yet the body is perfectly in balance,

Beautiful toucan, Sharon! The colors are gorgeous, and you have captured the expression of this colorful guy perfectly! And, like always, your background is fantastic!
So, if I send you some pictures of exotic birds, will you paint them?
My pineapple green cheek conure Kiwi would love to be painted, too!

That's interesting info about the beak, Dennis - I can add that to my storyline about this picture! Jani - send me a photograph of your pineapple green cheek conure Kiwi - mind you, I have absolutely no idea what that is!! Many thanks to everyone for the nice compliments!
