Ocean Blue/Green

What is the best Blue 'base color' to start with for the Ocean?

Oh wow, I think every place in the ocean has it's own colour, the Mediterranean is quite blue but the Nord Sea has always lots of grey and green in it.
It all depends on the depth of the sea and the kind of weather I think, but I think I would start with a cerulean blue, or phthalo.

Sue, I don't know anything about oil paints at all and I don't often look into the posts on oil but saw your post in the "Home" section and if it is any help to you, in the painting monthly challenge which I did in watercolour, I used Prussian blue as a base colour for the ocean but as I said, I know "feathers" about oil.  I would suggest trying it out on scrap paper first to see if it suits your painting.  Besides, I am pretty inexperienced in this art business and what I know is what I have learned from our tutors and forum members who are so gracious in helping out where they can.  Your best bet is to wait for the opinion of more experienced artists who will come to your aid as soon as they read your post.  Patricia

A lot will depend on the scene you wish to paint. What mood do you want to express? I have found I must do quite a bit more planning when it comes to 'water' scenes. The same scene painted on two days will have distinct mood changes. One day may be calm bright and clear, the other may be darker, shadowy, and gray.
Take your time, think what it is you want to convey and that will help lead you to what your colouring should be.

It's the perfect place to use the Color Buster! Look hard at the picture (if you are using a photograph) there will probably be several colors as the light changes across the scene and from the foreground to the horizon.
I'm in the middle of this myself so I feel the pain too!

Brian, I am ashamed to say, although i have downloaded and printed my color buster, I have never had it laminated, so I can't use it yet   

Guess i had better get it finished so I can use it someday

Use it unlaminated you can always print another one when you get time to laminate it!

Oh for heavens sakes, that's the easy way! Pishaw! 

I finally got my butt to Kinkos and hand mine laminated.  It was so fun to laminate it, I'm going to be laminating anything that sits still too long!  Watch out kitty!  >^.,.^<

PS you may try to protect it yourself with self adesive laminate sheets. you'll find them at michaels, joann fabrics, hobbyloby. once I found at office depot

   Doina,  lots of those store around, am sure I will find one to do it, or maybe try for the do-it-myself version
