Each topic has an icon next to it. The icon tells you a bit more about the status of that topic, eg is the topic locked or is a popular one, etc.

First lets look at what we call things:

On the forum index we have a list of categories, eg oil painting or watercolor painting.
These are segmented into boards, eg, general discussions and encourager sessions.

Here are the icons that appear on the forum index and what each mean :

No new topics or posts
There new topics or posts

When you want to add a new topic to the forum, then you find the most relevant board to start your topic in.

When you choose a board to look at or post in you will then see a list of topics posted by the members.
When starting a new topic, ensure it is relevant to the board you are in, eg. post a watercolor painting you want feedback on in the Watercolor encourager board.

Next give your new topic a name that makes sense. Many visitors are short on time, so scan the boards for interesting topics to read. If your topic just says "New Painting", the chances are that few people will take the time to click in and see what your new painting is all about. If however you give it a name like "Please comment on my new seascape painting", then you will get a much better response to your new topic.

Every time somebody replies to your new topic, that reply is called a post.

Each topic has an icon assigned to it, this is what they mean :

Topic you have posted in
Normal Topic
Hot Topic (More than 15 replies)
Very Hot Topic (More than 25 replies)
Locked Topic (You are not able to post here anymore, only read)
Sticky Topic (This topic is set to stay at the top of the list)
Poll - A multiple answer question

Below each list of topics, these icons are also shown with their meanings for easy reference.
