Getting help from the class tutors
on:
January 07, 2014, 11:58:21 PM
The site is very large with over 300 tutorials and over 15 000 members. These numbers are growing on a daily basis.
As a result the forum can become very busy at times and our tutors only have a certain amount of time available every day to comment on the forum.
As a result they start off by answering questions and commenting on the paid class paintings and drawings until their time limit is up. If there is time left they will comment on the paintings / drawings done outside of class. This does however mean that sometimes they will not look at or comment on some of the paintings and drawings posted on the forum
It is not that they don't want to look at all the work done from the classes and those outside the classes, it is unfortunately the fine line they have to walk in order to keep the balance between earning their living off the website by spending time producing paid content while still offering up time to help the members for free on the forum.
I am sure however that you will agree that the comments and suggestions given by the members are as valuable as those given by the tutors.
We have members of all experiences here so you will get awesome advice and suggestions from them. Remember the forum is here so we can all help each other
You should also read through the threads by the other members that have painted the same / similar paintings as you will find that most members battle with the same problems. There is a good chance that your question has already been answered.

Nolan, what you just said is so understandable and such good advice!
We've been spoiled by being able to rely on you for your expert opinion in a most timely fashion.
It's truly amazing how you and Dennis have managed to cover so much territory! We love and appreciate you both so much but it's time we let go of the apron strings.
Just keep moving on and we'll follow! It won't be easy, but well adjust!
I wish you every success! It's done my heart good to see the forum grow so much in the few years I've been a member.
May you become filthy rich!!!
We can help you with that!

Hello Nolan,
I recently purchased your all 6 of your How To Paint A Portrait eBooks. I am not sure if this is the vehicle to ask questions or not but I'm going to try and if you have a better way to ask any future questions please let me know how to do that.
I am preparing to paint portraits and I am now on your 6th book of the series - Final Portrait. I am still obtaining the art supplies I need before I begin because I am retired in Thailand now. But I like to read everything over one time and then go back and practice i.e. do eyes until I'm relatively comfortable, then nose, etc.
My questions is this - in Step 3 you say "Transfer the lines to my canvas and tracing paper". How, exactly, do I do that? I will have drawn in the lines on my enlarged paper with a watercolor pencil from Step 2 but do I then press hard on those lines to transfer them to my canvass? I think I understand how to transfer to tracing paper as the tracing paper is thin and I can place it over the photo and draw in the lines but the canvass is not clear so I am confused.
Thanks, Nolan, for helping an older retired gentlemen get into portrait painting!

Hi Pat,
for purchasing my books, I appreciate the support
I use either dress makers carbon paper (ideal) or pen carbon paper to transfer my lines to the canvas.
You will see on the forum there is a section for the Oil Painting Classes. Under that is a subheading for the portrait course. That is the best place to post your questions.

Nolan; I finally got to post art work to my gallery but I still can not post a topic and add a picture. I tried to submit to the monthly challenge but was not able.

Uploading is the hard part
If you go to the picture in your gallery, you will see there is a smg id=xxx tag
copy this tag and paste it where you need to show the image
HERE
is a video showing how to do this

Kathy one thing to note is that if you are adding photos to a post from an iPad then you can't copy the BBC Embed Code like you do on a computer. Instead you need to memorise or write down the code and type it in exactly like it is including all brackets, spaces and numbers. As Nolan said it will look a like
[smg id=xxxxx]
but the x's will be numbers. And to begin with at least I always preview my message before posting to see if it worked.
