I have a general question about the orange color that Dennis uses for the face around the eyes. He says to use orange, so is that any orange, a cadmium orange, or one you can make from red and yellow?
I would appreciate any input. I am new at portraits and do not know much about the colors to use.
Thank you
Kris

Dear dnaleri3;

Dennis uses Daler-Rowney Aqua fine watercolours, cad orange.  Any cad orange should work for you.
He tends to keep the colour range limited so every student can find a paint set that works for them.

I checked out the 'eye' video and he seems to be using cad. orange and the Ultra marine blue for the shading.

Cad. orange and Ut. Blue tend to give one a Burnt sienna color.   I couldn't see the actual mixing in this one.

I hope this helps!!!!   :painting:

Depending on the make of paints you have will sometimes call for a little creativity. I have Winsor & Newton, the cad. orange just doesn't work unless I add a tiny touch of cad. red to it. My cad orange is just too yellow.

Don't worry if it isn't an exact match, the technique is more important than the colour at the start. Just get a fair similarity in colour and have fun.  O0

The fun is in the doing not, in the worrying.
