In order for me to easily find and answer queries about this Lesson I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future. Thanks

Dear Dennis;
While watching the lesson #5, I noticed that you used the coloured photo
of the rose, not a black and white photo copy to get the tonal values.
Can we use a photo copy (black/white) or is it better to stay with a the
realistic image in colour?
Which way is it easier to figure out the subjects planes/strokes?

May Lynn, a very good question.
Until you are able to naturally see the tonal ranges in the different colours (comes with practice) the black and white version is of great help.
I suggest you have the colour photograph near at hand so that as you draw you can then keep on comparing the black against the colour. You will train your eye very much quicker this way.
I've been doing it for so many years that my eyes are trained to easily see the tonal ranges in he colours and to translate them to black and white.
It is not always easy to explain in writing (words) alone just how to do the strokes. I can only suggest you carefully follow what I am doing and study why the strokes are in that particular way. Study the strokes in the final demonstrations.

Dear Dennis;
Here is my first attempt at drawing "the Rose'
I panic towards the end and over did the far right petal.
I lost focus and the petal's plane lines got distorted/disappeared
on me.
I'll have another go in a couple of days.

Super duper stuff May Lynn. I really should get started on this course - I've been waiting ages for Pen and Ink to come along... You've provided me a little impetus to get ON and start!!!

Ok here is my rose. I just used an ink pen for this one until I get my supplies. So this will look different from Dennis's. Mine is more bolder strokes. Little hard to get fine lines. Good practice though.
