You think tortilon (blending stump) dipped[size=78%] in pan pastel would help?[/size]
I remember using that with charcoal powder in a charcoal drawing.

  Now I should have thought of that!            I can sharpen that to a fine point with my sandpaper!

Patricia that is one thing I like about the pan pastel.... they can be rubbed out completely with a good quality white vinyl rubber! I was hoping I could just take it down a level and rework from there.

Zayn reminded me of a very useful tool which I haven't used since I last used my charcoal which was a while ago. So, going to give that a go.

Was wondering if it blending stump worked?
You could also try smallest Watercolour brush....I remember now, I also kept one specially for lifting  and applying charcoal!hope that helps !

Still playing about a bit with the stump.... I think it should work as long as I haven't demolished the paper by now!

I've not tried using a fine brush.... will look into that. Thanks Zayn.

Zayn, I did try the stump but it seems I have flattened the paper one to many times.  It just won't hold anymore pastel. Lesson learned! I've left that ear until I can figure out something else. I did do more on the mouth and it looks better so the stump does work pretty well if you haven't mucked up the paper. 
I've added some grayish colour to the other ear, just so i could see where it was!  just thinking out how to finish that ear without creating the same fiasco as the other ear.
I'll say this for it..... it sure has been an interesting process!

He's looking mighty fine so far Val   

Sometimes when I have filled up the tooth on my paper, I will scrape a razor blade over the surface to remove excess pastel.

Thanks for that Fi.     I tried w/c 140# cp this time just to see what it was like. I don't think it's as tough as the pastel paper. Right now it feels almost like printer paper! I'll give it a scratch and see what happens.

One step forward....two steps back 

Not sure what round I'm in  with this fellow. Have done more on him, but still no luck with the ears.  Thinking perhaps I should forget the grey and just fill in with the brown tones. Sometimes you just have to work with what you've got.

Poor fellow, the gray makes him look washed out.  Maybe a darker grey,

I think your idea for browning him up might work.

I just went back an looked at all the earlier versions that people did.  Seems that they are all in the "50 shades of gray" range.

Hang in.  You'll get it yet.

    Val your dog has such a beautiful face and I think you are right going with the more ochre colours. Give it a try and see if it works.

Mea, I did try a darker grey originally....didn't work out very well. I think I may set this aside for a bit and come back to it. Overthinking it just clouds the issue.

Thanks be Patricia for always being there.     I think I'll put this fellow aside for a bit....I swear he's getting more and more worried looking every time I look at him!        Can't blame him poor soul, I'd be worried too!
