Recently I have discovered Golden (brand name) grounds for pastels-A thick solution that you can apply to art panels or canvas's to give them more tooth so that they will accept pastels .It gives a sandpaper like feel-similar to Ampersand(brand name)art panels and you aren't limited to paper.It's fun to work with.

It is the same as what I have. I use it on the back of the thick calendar backings, etc.

Thanks for this.  I also discovered that you can apply Clear gesso to paper or panel and get a sanded surface.  The while gesso has no pumice in it. This is a suggestion on Karen Margulis' youtube video, a great pastel artist, take a look. If she wants even more tooth she adds some more ground pumice.
