Don's BDay Card
on:
September 20, 2014, 02:54:48 AM
This is a white-tail deer in colored pencil. It's a birthday card for my brother. I believe I'll be re-painting with acrylics because it looks a little rough to me but what do you think? Toss it?
It's a belated birthday card!! The antlers look pink but they are not pink--must be my scanner.

Have you tried baby oil to smooth it out?
Maybe test it out on a scrap piece of paper first...or turps.

No Natalie I haven't tried anything like that but I'll experiment before tackling the deer. In the past I tried using the iron and wax paper..I can't remember what happened but I don't think it was great. Thanks for your help Natalie.
I just watched the baby oil technique on youtube..thank you Natalie.

No, no, don't toss it!!!
The Buck is terrific and you have done tooo much work to toss it! Have you used a colourless blender pencil? What brand of pencils are you using and what kind of paper, if you don't mind me asking. It looks as if his antlers may need a bit of dark shading along the edges to give them rounding. You can use your blender pencil then go back in and add another colour on top. Looking good, it just needs a bit of tweaking. . . . . .

Natalie and Bev S.!! I revised the card according to your suggestions and I love it now. It is already in the envelope ready to send. I used (get this) coconut oil because I didn't have any baby oil. I was astonished how it smoothed things out but it also took some of the color off. But I just added more color and finally sprayed it with Krylon Preservative. My brother is one of those people who think a painting should look like a photo. So we will see if he calls me and tells me the nose isn't right or something. Thank you both again!! Carol

Your brother will be thrilled Carol it is a very nice drawing. Using "oil" to smooth wow. May i suggest that in your acrilic of the deer you re-arrange the grass behind him, i find, it kind of follows the antlers to much. Just a thought.
