I'll give you advice that was given to me. Layers, lots of layers. Meaning you keep adding layers of strokes when doing fur. It totally changed how my scratchboards looked when I was done. I do a layer and an ink wash, then add more scratches and repeat the process 4-5 times. You also want to remember that animals with longer fur are going to have tufts of fur that are going different directions, so to make it more realistic, you want to make sure the fur isn't all going the same direction. I'm attaching a piece I completed recently. It's only the third piece I've done but I think it came out well.

I think your piece came out really good.

Nancy - Awesome!!! Thanks so much for the advise. I am going at it again. Not sure what I will try next. I did add a lot of layers but probably could have done more. I used watercolor so need to get me some inks.

there is just something bothering me about the bottom left hand corner, there seems to an angle that is wrong, just check with your reference photo to see if I am right please?

Great advice Nancy, scratchboarding is great for single layer work, until you start adding colour, then you need to draw in multiple layers to show the highlights

Here is the reference picture that I used for my Lioness. My cousin took the picture last year when he was in Africa. I cropped the picture but the cropped version is on my computer that is being repaired.
