Has anyone tried sanding the finish off of their scratchboard to get variations in gray tones? Any success?

I've used wire wool for that, Val. I suggest trying it out on a scrap first to find the right levels of pressure and technique.

Thanks Nolan, I'll pick up a few different types. Waterproof (smoother finish) and some Garnet (rougher finish). 220-1000 grit sound good?

While picking up some parts at the marine store, I found some 'synthetic' steel wool for sanding and polishing. No oils, won't rust (big for me), no splintering or shredding!
Going to have a go with this. Will post photos of 'it' and the results in a bit.

Ah, glad you found that.
I couldn't help with your query because mine came in a scraperboard kit that I bought.

Here's the synthetic steel wool I found. Made by 3M, I found Extra Fine (000), and Medium (#2). Each pack contains six pieces, hopefully will outlast the regular 'wool' ! Will be trying it out later today.
