Zach,
Nice photography. I can appreciate when I see a good photo since I take such terrible ones. Thanks for sharing.

Natalie - I remember reading something in my matting book (THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO BASIC MAT CUTTING by Vivian c. Ckistler, CPF). There wasn't much but the following: "...Even-border mats are attractive and they provide that important sense of balance for many art work pieces.
Another style of mat, often considered traditional, is weighted at the bottom with an extra width of matting. Some people feel strongly about which of the two styles they prefer; others make their selection based on the best presentation for each piece."
The example of standard sizes was for an 8" x 10" picture, was a 16" x 20" mat - one mat was cut 4"x5"x4"x5" and the other 4"x4"x4"x6" - 6" being on the bottom.

Nice work Zach. Do you use photoshop or lightroom? Just curious.

The moment you find yourself mostly satisfied with a painting and think you'll "just quickly" do this or that, that's the moment to stop completely. Take the painting off your easel and put it aside for at least 24 hours, then reassess whether it really needs that tweak.
