I was warned that I would have some unsuccessful nights...
Almost didn't post but am doing so as encouragement to anyone doing this.  It doesn't always work out.

I'm glad you did post Lynn.     No things don't always work out as you can tell from my first attempt following yours.  AND... you will see proof of that reinforced when I post the second one         Still trying to fix it up a little, but will post soon.

Thanks Mea.  His proportions are a bit off.  Lisa--I think the RUSH sometimes does add a little whimsy--good lesson there.  Sometimes our first marks are our best.  Someone once said to me that Degas made decisive pastel marks and didn't go back and rub out or blend here or there.  That habit says "Oh, I didn't really mean that!"


Thanks Dennis for this suggestion.  I haven't been dating but I will go back and do that!


Val--No failures in this really.  Seems like the practice alone is a success as I can see the slow learning curve in my work. I went to a gesture class and was taught some steps for gesture but I have to say that applying them is now making my drawings worse--but perhaps this is a necessary step.

Thanks my sweet friends.  This is so hard and I don't think I will get much better without HOURS of practice.  Here is my life drawing practice this week, while waiting for Open Studio on Thursday. These are all charcoal and I timed myself for an hour each since I am always under time limits in life drawing.  The first two are the same plaster cast oriented differently with different lighting.  The last is oh so serious MOI.  Thought I would try a self-portrait since there is no one around to draw!  You don't do much smiling while concentrating.  You can see my construction lines on this one (midpoint and thirds lines)

Well here are 2 attempts toward my life drawing goal.  The jazz musician was our model at our first portrait class.  I didn't draw this from life as the first class was a demo with detailed steps for doing a portrait in charcoal.  Our amazing teacher, Carol Peebles, drew this gentleman and then he treated us with some music.  Amazing.  I got his picture and drew this pose today, practicing the steps I saw.  First portrait model is next week.


The second is from a virtual life drawing site with models.  I did a quick little graphite and watercolor sketch of the model.

Looking through your sketches I am gobsmacked by what you refer to as 'quick little sketches'.     My idea of 'quick' on these is a few days on each! 

Getting closer to being back at it, starting to move things back into a semblance of normalcy(?!) 

When I get my stuff organized I'm going to lock myself in for days!!!
