I am experimenting with eraseable coloured pencils. Very difficult subject because she is predominately very dark black and hard to differentiate hair direction, etc. Also made the mistake of trying it on a canvas board with much too much texture.
I would appreciate any ideas on bringing out the fur texture on very black animals.
Because I can no longer see properly (double vision) to locate my brush on the easel I have taken to drawing because I can rest my hand on the desktop. This is my first try with erasable colour pencils, which I really like.
Next time though I will gesso the board to give me a smoother surface.
Any other suggestions?

Hmmm..Alan, it's a good drawing but the drawing surface does not do it justice.

Nolan, would any of the techniques in your Light-Haired dog lesson help him in this case?

I tried this one again, but this time on the same type canvas board but I double coated the board with gesso.
I was more able to bring out the detail in the fur, but it is still too textured for a good drawing (colour erasable pencils). I guess I'm just going to have to buy some drawing panels, because although I enjoy drawing on standard drawing paper I am making these to hang without framing.

Well, Alan, we are all learning a lesson here.  The surface has to be good enough for what's drawn on it.

Alan;  I like your drawing.  If you want better paper than copy paper use Bristol board smooth,  There will not be any texture weave. Kathy

    Alan, your Bernese Mountain Dog is just great but would be even better on smoother texture. Sorry to hear about your double vision ... is there anything that could be done for it?   I pray so.  Patricia

Thanks all. I am under a neurologist's care, but no answers yet. Pretty sure something is pressing against optical nerve so hopefully my MRI will show it to be removable.

Good drawing Alan  O0 Shame about the rough texture though.

Hoping your MRI reveals a possible solution for your vision. In the meanwhile, your drawings are fabulous  O0 Keep them coming.
Cheers, Val
