Dennis, have I made a mistake with the light direction?  If I have, my apologies Denise, you see what I mean about instructing anyone else???  If the light is coming from the left as is what I thought by the poms having the highlights on their left, then surely the shadow should be cast onto the right side of the painting as you look at it straight on??  Please correct me Dennis for I have put the shadow of the bowl on the right side.   :crazy2:

Patricia, in the actual photograph and the painting the light is coming from the left. In Denise's painting the light is coming from the right. In this case the shadows and the highlights have to change.

Thank you Danielle! I will add more color as you suggest :)

Patricia, please don't ever hesitate to make suggestions for me! I value all you have to say and know that we all want each other to become better artists. I truly look forward to the critiques because I miss seeing so many things that need to be corrected and that could use improvement. I totally understand where you were coming from so don't let that stop you next time okay!? I appreciate you so much!

Dennis, thank you for moving my post and for your recommendations. I will make those changes.
I have learned so much from you and look forward to more...

One of the valuable things I learned through this lesson also is regarding the indents on the plate. I unintentionally made mine opposite of the sample. The indents look raised instead of sunken. I'm thinking this is an effect of color and not the shadowing? Looking forward to advice on this - I'll have to keep it in mind for future projects.

  Oh! Denise, I would hate to put you on the wrong track and felt sick in the stomach to think that I had instructed you incorrectly. I didn't notice that you had made the light coming from the right for it didn't look much different from the lesson's painting apart from the shadow of the bowl. Dennis' keen eye picked it up immediately. Anyway, I am pleased you understand my hesitancy in voicing my opinions for I am still such a novice at this. With regard to the bowl, they were indents. Looking straight on at the painting, the indents were lighter on the left side and darker on the right side of the bowl to show the shadow and illustrate that the light was coming from the left.
Hope this helps.

:thankyou:  Zayn for your sweet message which I appreciate immensely.

Patricia and Denise,

I like the design on the plate both ways - indented and raised.

Each of you did them differently and equally beautifully done.

:thankyou:  Danielle for your great suggestion, I also thought so when I posted the last picture and I will darken it for sure.  We never stop learning and my appreciation goes to all you wonderful artists and our fantastic tutors for taking us by the hand and showing us the way. Thank you.

:thankyou:  Mea, yes, I also agree that the painting looks good both ways.

:thankyou: Denise for your understanding and I love the way you have made the painting "your own" which illustrates that there are many ways we can and do things differently which, at the same time, expands our creativity too. You have done an excellent job, be proud.

:thankyou: Val for your encouraging comment.
